Your managing director wants a content plan on the next board agenda, which is an easy thing to want when you are not the one writing it, and your team is already stretched across campaigns, events and email. Before you ask for budget, you must decide whether content marketing is worth funding and whether to train your own people or pay an agency or freelancer to do it.
Content marketing is publishing useful articles, posts, video and email that answer your buyers’ questions, so they find and trust you before a sales conversation starts. For UK firms, the strategies that work are fewer pages that answer real buyer questions, senior staff publishing thought leadership on LinkedIn, and email that respects consent rules. Many teams build these skills through content marketing training for UK teams, then buy in only the production they cannot sustain.
In 2026 content marketing also has to survive AI search, because Ofcom’s December 2025 research found AI Overviews on about 30% of UK searches, so only specific, citable material earns attention. This guide is for UK heads of marketing who must justify the spend from the marketing budget or the learning and development budget. We sell content marketing training for teams, so we have an interest in the in-house option, and we say below where buying in is the better call.
We trained key senior personnel at Huthwaite International, a sales training business, in strategic social media management and thought leadership content marketing. Our Huthwaite International case study reports 55 Tier 1 leads generated through stakeholder profiling, more than £100,000 in business lead conversions and “2,000+ topline ROI”.
Why does content marketing matter to UK businesses in 2026?
Slow budget growth and scarce digital skills make owned content the cheapest lever a UK marketing team has in 2026, and the IPA’s July 2026 Bellwether Report shows budgets moving cautiously, with 23.8% of respondents increasing marketing spend while 16.9% cut it. The IPA’s Bellwether Report also found main media advertising and PR budgets grew only modestly, at +1.5% and +1.4%, so owned content is where a stretched budget goes further. The harder constraint is skill, since the Department for Education’s Employer Skills Survey 2024 found 38% of skill-shortage vacancies were caused partly by a lack of digital skills, up from 32% in 2022.
My view is that most UK firms should publish less, and a stop list is worth more than a calendar. Before you write the board paper, list the three questions your sales team hears every week and check whether any published page answers them.
Which content marketing strategies work best for B2B firms?
For business-to-business firms, thought leadership published by named senior people, usually on LinkedIn, has the strongest evidence: Edelman and LinkedIn’s 2025 thought leadership report found 95% of hidden buyers, the colleagues who shape a purchase without being the named contact, say compelling thought leadership makes them more open to sales and marketing outreach. Edelman’s June 2025 analysis found 53% of B2B decision-makers say brand recognition matters less when a company’s thought leadership is strong. Our Huthwaite International case study, where we trained senior personnel in thought leadership content marketing, reports 55 Tier 1 leads generated through stakeholder profiling.
Edelman and LinkedIn’s 2025 report drew on nearly 2,000 professionals worldwide, so a UK team should test its findings against UK evidence. Our ENGIE case study page reports a 7.9% increase in share of voice on social media from a programme upskilling senior stakeholders across ENGIE UK. Give two or three senior people one buyer question each, and see our B2B social media training for long sales cycles. When those posts start conversations, our guide on getting B2B leads from LinkedIn messages without spam covers the follow-up.
How are AI Overviews and AI assistants changing content marketing?
AI Overviews and AI assistants are answering many questions before anyone clicks, and Ofcom’s December 2025 report found about 30% of UK searches show AI Overviews, with 53% of adults saying they see these summaries often. The Reuters Institute’s Generative AI and News Report (October 2025) found that among people who saw AI answers, 33% always or often click the links in the overview. Content must therefore be specific enough for an AI system to cite and give anyone who clicks something the summary left out, such as original figures or a named expert’s view.
Kian Scott-Loach, Head of Digital at Terrence Higgins Trust, said of Social Media Training’s trainers: “We were impressed by their depth of knowledge in a rapidly changing environment.” AI search changes quickly, so whoever trains your team needs current knowledge of how AI answers are assembled.
The Office for National Statistics reported in July 2026 that 55% of employees use AI for work or education, against around 35% of businesses reporting use of at least one AI technology. Agree a written AI drafting rule, rewrite your five most-visited pages to answer their question first, and see our SEO and AI search training if nobody owns search.
What UK rules apply to content and email marketing?
Two sets of UK rules shape most content marketing: the ICO’s guidance on PECR for marketing emails, and the ASA’s CAP Code on recognising advertising. The ICO’s October 2026 PECR guidance says unsolicited marketing emails to individual subscribers need their consent or must meet all the requirements of a soft opt-in, according to Information Commissioner’s Office (October 2026). The ICO’s PECR guidance also says you can send unsolicited email marketing to corporate subscribers, meaning business addresses, without consent or a soft opt-in.
Once you know who you may email, the CAP Code governs how the message looks, because unsolicited marketing emails must be obviously identifiable as marketing communications without the need to open them, according to Committee of Advertising Practice’s The CAP Code, Section 02 (retrieved October 2026). The same identification duty reaches beyond email: Section 2 of the CAP Code requires marketing communications to be obviously identifiable as such, and the ASA / CAP Executive’s Recognising ads advice (August 2026) applies it to social media and influencer marketing.
The Department for Education’s Employer Skills Survey 2024 found new legislative or regulatory requirements were, at 37%, among the most common reasons employers gave for upskilling staff, so make these rules part of what your publishers are taught. Split your email list by subscriber type, label every creator brief as advertising, and see our influencer marketing training for UK teams if creators are in your plan.
Should you train your team in content marketing or buy it in?
My advice, from running these sessions at Social Media Training, is to train your own team when your content depends on knowledge only your people hold, such as sector expertise or a senior person’s point of view, and to buy it in when you need specialist production your team will not repeat. We trained 71 academics at Northumbria University between September 2023 and April 2024 to become trusted voices online, and I went in expecting academics to be the hardest room in the country to get posting. The Northumbria University case study page reports that average online influence rose by 59% and that 43% improved how they use social media, so I no longer say that about academics.
Our seven-course programme for LSL Estate Agency Franchising reached Your Move and Reeds Rains branch teams, and its case study page reports 881 attendances across 21 live sessions, a 7.7/10 presenter score and about one in five posting more. An agency’s expertise leaves when the contract ends, so keep the point of view inside the business.
Train, buy in or mix: a content capability scorecard for UK marketing teams
| Criterion | Scores nought | Scores one | Scores two |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where the expertise sits | With an agency | Mixed | Only inside the business |
| How often the format repeats | One-off | Quarterly | Weekly |
| Whether senior people must be the voice | No | Sometimes | Yes |
| Internal hours available each week | None | Under four | Four or more |
| Specialist production needed, such as video or design | Heavy | Some | Little |
| Compliance exposure under PECR or the CAP Code | Low | Medium | High |
Score each criterion and add up the total. Nine to twelve points to training in-house, five to eight to training the team and buying in production, and nought to four to an agency or freelancer, with one person trained to brief and judge their work. If you land in the middle band, contact our training team to scope it.
What does content marketing cost, and what does training cost?
Content marketing costs mostly staff time, and Social Media Training’s content marketing training for teams is priced “From £1,200” for a half day with up to six people. The Department for Education’s Employer Skills Survey 2024 found UK employers spent £2,710 per trainee and £1,700 per employee on training in 2024, a benchmark for any learning and development request. The larger, ongoing cost is the hours your team spends each week planning, writing, approving and distributing content, plus any design or video work you buy.
Cost one quarter in staff hours per role, and ask any supplier for a day rate and who owns the templates afterwards. For a per-seat comparison, see our guide on how much B2B marketing training courses cost per seat.
For the session plan and what your team leaves with, see our half-day content marketing training.
How do you launch a content marketing programme in 12 weeks?
You can launch a first content marketing programme in one quarter by building it around answer-first pages, an approach Ofcom’s research on how often AI Overviews appear in UK search supports. The ICO’s PECR guidance on consent and soft opt-in decides who you may email before anything is written, so compliance belongs in the first month, according to Information Commissioner’s Office (October 2026). Edelman and LinkedIn’s research on hidden buyers makes the case for two or three senior people publishing under their own names on LinkedIn, with a marketing executive editing their posts.
- Weeks one and two. Interview sales and customer service staff for the ten questions buyers ask most, then write a stop list.
- Weeks three and four. Ask a marketing executive to split the email list by subscriber type and add ad labelling to creator briefs, while you sign up two or three senior voices.
- Weeks five to eight. Publish one answer-first page a fortnight, with each senior voice posting weekly on LinkedIn and the marketing executive editing.
- Weeks nine to twelve. Report against enquiries or meetings booked, check which pages appear in AI Overviews, then decide what to keep, stop or buy in.
What this will not fix
Training will not create time, so if nobody is given hours each week, the plan stalls however good the course was. It will not rescue an offer buyers do not want, because content amplifies a proposition and cannot replace one.
It will not turn a marketing team into a video production house, so buy in specialist production. Fix approval chains that hold posts for a fortnight before you train anyone. For complex campaigns, training does not replace legal advice on PECR or the CAP Code.
Questions to ask a trainer or agency before you sign
Questions to put to any content marketing trainer or agency, with strong and weak answers
| Question | Strong answer | Weak answer |
|---|---|---|
| Will the training use our own content and accounts? | Yes: it is built on your brief and the content you already publish | A standard deck with generic big-brand examples |
| What will our team leave with? | A content plan for the next quarter, a stop list and templates for the formats you will repeat | A certificate of attendance and the slides |
| How will we know whether it worked? | A reporting view tied to a business question such as enquiries or meetings | Follower counts and impressions |
| How do you cover PECR and the CAP Code? | Explains consent and soft opt-in for individual subscribers, corporate subscriber rules and ad labelling | Says compliance is a job for your legal team |
| How should our content change for AI Overviews and AI assistants? | Answer-first structure, named sources and original data worth citing | Add more keywords and publish more often |
| Who owns the expertise when the work ends? | Your team, with documented templates and a plan | The supplier keeps the process and the know-how |
| Can you show a named client result and where it is reported? | Links a case study page and states only what that page reports | Unnamed clients and unsourced growth percentages |
| What will you tell us to stop doing? | Names specific formats or channels to drop | Recommends adding channels and nothing else |
Frequently asked questions
What are good examples of content marketing in the UK?
Social Media Training’s own case studies give three UK examples worth studying. Huthwaite International trained senior personnel in thought leadership content, Northumbria University trained academics to become trusted voices online, and Your Move and Reeds Rains trained estate agency branch teams in social media. Each programme built content around people who already held the expertise buyers wanted, which is the pattern to copy.
What is the difference between content marketing and social media marketing?
Content marketing is the wider practice of planning, creating and distributing useful material that answers buyers’ questions across your website, email, video and social channels. Social media marketing is one distribution route within it, covering posts and paid campaigns on platforms such as LinkedIn or Instagram. A sound content plan decides what to say first, then picks the channels that suit it.
Do you need consent to send B2B marketing emails in the UK?
The ICO’s October 2026 guidance on PECR says you can send unsolicited email marketing to corporate subscribers without consent or a soft opt-in, according to Information Commissioner’s Office (October 2026). Under PECR, individual subscribers need their consent or a soft opt-in that meets all its requirements. Either way, the Committee of Advertising Practice’s The CAP Code, Section 02 (retrieved October 2026) says an unsolicited marketing email must be identifiable as marketing without being opened.
How much does content marketing training cost in the UK?
Social Media Training’s content marketing training for teams is priced “From £1,200” for a half day with up to six people, built around your brief and your own content. For comparison, the Department for Education’s Employer Skills Survey 2024 found UK employers spent £2,710 per trainee on training in 2024. Set the training line beside the staff hours your programme will need.
Can AI write our content marketing for us?
AI tools can speed up drafting and repurposing, and the Office for National Statistics reported in July 2026 that around 35% of UK businesses with 10 or more employees now use AI. Generic drafts are what AI Overviews already summarise, so keep the point of view, the examples and the final edit with a named person. Agree a written AI drafting rule before anyone publishes.
Start with the people who already know your buyers
The Northumbria University case study page reports a 59% rise in average online influence among academics who had never thought of themselves as content people. If the expertise your buyers want is already in your building, talk to us about content marketing training for your team and we will help give those people a method and the hours to publish. Put their names on the board paper before you put an agency’s there. You can find all our other guides on our Resources page.
