Your sellers sent hundreds of LinkedIn connection requests last quarter, got a few polite replies and no meetings, and the MD is now forwarding an automation demo that promises ten times the volume. Before anyone signs, decide whether the money is better spent training the team than buying volume.
Earn the reply before you pitch: pick a short list of named accounts, rewrite your sellers’ profiles for buyers, warm each contact through comments and useful posts, then send a short note ending in a question the buyer can answer in a line. Research in the European Journal of Marketing (2023) concludes that salespeople need training and coaching to gain performance from social media, according to University of Texas Rio Grande Valley ScholarWorks. That makes social selling training for sales teams a better first spend than automation.
Social selling means salespeople earning replies from named B2B buyers through a credible profile, visible engagement and short, relevant messages. This guide is for UK heads of sales whose team’s LinkedIn messages go ignored and who hold the budget to fix that. We sell LinkedIn social selling training, so we have an interest in the answer being to train the team, and the section on what this will not fix sets out its limits.
I trained senior people at Huthwaite International, a sales training business, to manage their social media strategically and publish thought leadership content. The Huthwaite International case study reports 55 Tier 1 leads generated through stakeholder profiling and £100,000+ in business lead conversions.
Maria Kirby, Head of Digital at a commercial law firm, said of a project with Prohibition, the agency behind Social Media Training: “Prohibition has put a lot of care and hard work into the project.”
Why are your LinkedIn messages being ignored?
LinkedIn messages are often ignored because they come from a stranger whose profile gives the buyer little reason to reply, and Social Media Training’s own staff survey at Bango shows how common quiet profiles are inside a company. Before we ran LinkedIn sessions at Bango, a technology and payments company, we surveyed 53 staff and found 62% were not sure what to post, 51% were not comfortable with analytics and 38% posted less than monthly. We then delivered 2 sessions of up to 3 hours, tailored by level, according to our Bango case study.
With 62% of Bango staff unsure what to post, comments are the easier place to start, because a useful line under a buyer’s post builds visible activity without anyone writing a post from scratch. Before anyone changes a message, have each seller open their own profile as a prospect would and note what is missing. For other teams’ starting points, see our portfolio of client case studies.
Is it legal to send B2B sales messages on LinkedIn in the UK?
B2B sales messages on LinkedIn can be lawful in the UK, but the Information Commissioner’s Office business-to-business marketing guidance (May 2025) lists direct messages via social media as electronic mail, so LinkedIn messages used for marketing fall under the PECR electronic marketing rules. Taking someone’s details from a public LinkedIn profile gives no exemption either, because the ICO says marketing to an individual with publicly available personal data must comply with the UK GDPR, even in a business context.
The ICO classes sole traders and other types of partnerships as individual subscribers, and PECR treats them the same as individuals. When someone at a company asks you to stop, the ICO says you should comply with a corporate subscriber’s opt-out request.
Write a one-page team rule covering sole-trader checks, an opt-out log and a recorded reason for choosing each prospect. Check it with your data protection lead, since this guide reports ICO guidance without giving legal advice.
How can you tell whether a LinkedIn message will read as spam?
You can tell whether a LinkedIn message will read as spam with Prohibition’s five-point spam test, taken from the exercise on our LinkedIn sales course where delegates read messages to real prospects aloud and then rewrite the ones that would have been ignored. The test checks a LinkedIn sales message for a specific reason to contact this person, some earlier contact, a length that fits a phone screen, a small ask and an easy way to say no, scoring each check nought, one or two for a total out of ten. Send messages scoring eight or more, rewrite those scoring five to seven and delete anything lower.
Five-point spam test for LinkedIn sales messages
| Check | Scores two when | Scores nought when |
|---|---|---|
| Reason | It names the account, role or trigger | It could go to anyone |
| Earlier contact | The buyer has seen the sender’s comments or posts | The name is new to the buyer |
| Length | It reads on a phone without scrolling | The point needs scrolling |
| Ask | It asks a question or offers a resource | It asks for a call |
| Exit | Declining is easy and opt-outs are honoured | It chases after a no |
Take an invented example: a note to a prospect called Sarah that says you help firms like hers grow revenue and asks if she is free for a quick call scores nought on reason, earlier contact and ask, two on length and one on exit. That makes three out of ten, so it gets deleted. A made-up rewrite, sent after the seller has replied once in a thread Sarah started, tells her that her comment on supplier onboarding delays was the sharpest point in it and asks how her team is handling those delays. It scores two each on reason, length, ask and exit and one on earlier contact, so it reaches nine out of ten and gets sent.
Score five of last month’s real messages at your next team meeting.
How do you move a sales team from cold outreach to social selling in six weeks?
A sales team can move from cold outreach to social selling in six weeks by following the order Social Media Training’s social selling course page sets out: buyers and profiles first, engagement next and messages last, building towards a cadence the team can keep going in week six. Peer-reviewed research in the European Journal of Marketing (2023) concludes that organisations need to train salespeople and coach them in building their social capital if social media is to help them create more value with customers, according to University of Texas Rio Grande Valley ScholarWorks (Feb 2023).
- Week one, the list. Agree about thirty named accounts per seller, the list size our LinkedIn training for sales teams page works to, and map each buying group.
- Week two, the profiles. Have sellers rewrite their headline and About section for a buyer, then check each one in a one-to-one.
- Week three, the engagement. Ask sellers for twenty minutes a day commenting on buyers’ posts, plus one useful post a week.
- Week four, the connections. Send connection requests with no pitch, only to people who have seen that engagement.
- Week five, the messages. Read first messages aloud at the team meeting and send only those scoring eight or more on the spam test.
- Week six, the review. Review replies, meetings and opt-outs, then drop accounts showing no response.
The mapping in week one is stakeholder profiling, and our Huthwaite International case study credits stakeholder profiling with generating its 55 Tier 1 leads, though the page does not say Huthwaite followed this plan. Switch off any automation tool for the six weeks, because nobody can coach messages a machine wrote.
At Verve, a research and insight business, we followed a two-tier LinkedIn masterclass with one-to-one sessions in which subject experts built personal plans, and the case study records 45 staff invited across 4 countries and one-to-one expert sessions in September 2022. The group sessions taught everyone the method, and the one-to-ones turned it into a plan each person could own. Copy that split by teaching the team together on Fridays and using each seller’s one-to-one to agree their own accounts and next step.
Does training a sales team beat buying automation or sending more outreach?
In Social Media Training’s view, training a sales team is usually a better first step for LinkedIn lead generation than buying automation or sending more outreach, because automation multiplies whatever a team already sends: a message ignored at twenty a day is still ignored at two hundred. Social Media Training’s Huthwaite International case study reports leads generated through stakeholder profiling after the company’s senior staff were trained in strategic social media management and thought leadership. Social Media Training’s LinkedIn social selling training costs from £1,200 for half a day, according to our social selling course page, paid once, though coaching the team afterwards takes manager time each week, whereas an automation licence is usually charged per seat every month for as long as you keep it.
Cost the automation quote over a year by multiplying the monthly per-seat fee by your number of sellers and by twelve, then set that total beside the one-off half day and the manager hours. Bring in automation only once manually written messages score eight or more on the spam test every week. Before signing a contract, run the six-week plan with two sellers and compare their replies with the rest of the team.
What does LinkedIn social selling training cost in the UK?
LinkedIn social selling training in the UK from Prohibition costs from £1,200 for half a day, according to our social selling course page, which also lists a full day at £1,800 for up to six people, excluding VAT, which works out at £300 a head when six people attend. Prohibition delivers every session privately, at your offices anywhere in the UK, at its Leeds studio or live online, and the same content can run as a programme spread across several weeks.
The half day of our social selling programme for B2B sales teams covers the buyer, profile rewrites, a target list and first messages, all run on your own target accounts. The full day adds the later material, such as Sales Navigator and working the follow-up. The options are set out on our page of training formats, levels and prices.
What this will not fix
- A weak offer or poor fit with your target buyers. Better messages expose that faster without changing it.
- Teams with no named target accounts, or consumer brands selling low-value products at volume, where our own course page says paid social is the better route.
- Sellers who cannot protect around twenty minutes a day for engagement.
- Outreach to sole traders, where PECR treats them as individuals and training does not change the rules, according to Information Commissioner’s Office’s Business-to-business marketing (May 2025).
- Habits after a single session. A half day without the manager’s weekly checking and the ninety-day follow-up described on our course page tends to fade by week six.
- Managers who report impressions or SSI scores in place of replies, meetings and pipeline.
What should you ask a LinkedIn sales trainer before booking?
Use these questions with any trainer and listen for the difference between a working answer and a sales line. Several of the strong answers describe how Prohibition works, so put the same questions to us and judge our answers just as hard.

Questions to put to a LinkedIn sales trainer, with strong and weak answers
| Question | Strong answer | Weak answer |
|---|---|---|
| Will you work on our own target accounts? | Yes, the target list and profiles are requested beforehand and used in every exercise | Generic examples to adapt afterwards |
| How will we measure whether it worked? | Replies, conversations, meetings and pipeline from named accounts | Profile views, impressions or an SSI score |
| What happens after the session? | A daily cadence, a manager tracking view and a planned follow-up | Slides emailed afterwards |
| How do you handle PECR and UK GDPR? | ICO guidance that social media direct messages count as electronic mail, plus sole traders and opt-outs (Information Commissioner’s Office) | LinkedIn messages are exempt from the rules |
| Do you teach automation tools? | Where automation breaks, with messages written by people | A tool demo and a sequence template |
| Can you show a named B2B result? | A named client case with figures and a clear caveat | Figures with no client, date or caveat |
| Do you find out what the team can do first? | A pre-session brief or staff survey sets a baseline | Everyone gets the same course |
Frequently asked questions
When should I pitch after a LinkedIn connection is accepted?
Pitch only after the buyer has replied to a small ask, such as a question about a problem they raised in a post. The connection request itself should give one specific reason for connecting, refer to something the buyer posted or commented on and leave the pitch out. Once the buyer has answered, offer a relevant resource or a short call, and score every message on the five-point spam test before it goes.
What do good B2B LinkedIn outreach messages look like?
Good B2B LinkedIn outreach messages name a real trigger, such as a post, a role change or a project the buyer has discussed, and link it to a problem the sender understands. They fit on a phone screen and end with a question the buyer can answer in a line. They also make saying no easy, and ICO guidance says you should comply with a corporate subscriber’s opt-out request, according to Information Commissioner’s Office’s Business-to-business marketing (May 2025).
How many LinkedIn outreach messages should a salesperson send per day?
Set no daily send target: give each seller about thirty named accounts and twenty minutes a day for commenting, connecting and replying. A fixed quota pushes sellers towards templated notes that fail the reason and earlier-contact checks on the five-point spam test. Raise volume only once manually written messages score eight or more out of ten every week, and have the manager track replies and meetings in place of sends.
Should salespeople post on LinkedIn before messaging prospects?
Salespeople should build visible activity before messaging, and a 2023 European Journal of Marketing study recommends using social media to build market knowledge and reputation that can then support networking, according to University of Texas Rio Grande Valley ScholarWorks (February 2023). One useful post a week and a few thoughtful comments on target buyers’ posts give a prospect something to find, and comments are the easier start for sellers unsure what to post.
Can I message sole traders on LinkedIn without consent in the UK?
Not without checking first: PECR treats sole traders as individuals, so consent rules can apply. ICO business-to-business marketing guidance says sole traders and other types of partnerships are classed as individual subscribers and PECR treats them the same as individuals. Check how each prospect trades before sending any marketing message, and ask your data protection lead first if you are unsure.
