Corporate social media training

When social is spread across departments and nobody owns it

Corporate social media training for larger organisations, where the problem is rarely skill and usually coordination. Several teams posting, no agreed governance, inconsistent tone and a sign off process that either does not exist or takes four days. Private, in house, from £1,200 for up to six people, excluding VAT.

What is corporate social media training?

Training for organisations large enough that social media is no longer one person’s job. Typically that means several accounts, several departments, a brand team that wants consistency, a legal or compliance interest, and a sign off process that everybody complains about.

The training that works at this size is different from small business training. The skills gap is usually modest. The coordination gap is enormous, and no amount of teaching people how to write a better caption fixes it.

Is this the right page for you?

Yes, if

You have more than one team or account posting. Tone varies noticeably depending on who published. Sign off is slow, unclear or both. There is a brand guideline document that social does not really follow. Somebody senior has asked why the numbers are not better and nobody has a defensible answer.

Probably not, if

You are an owner or a small team doing everything yourselves, in which case social media training for small businesses is a better fit and a better day. If the need is staff across the organisation posting personally, that is employee social media training.

What does the training cover?

1. Who owns what

Accounts, channels, budgets and decisions mapped in the room. Usually the first time anybody has written it down.

2. Governance without paralysis

A sign off process proportionate to risk, so a routine post does not wait four days behind a press release.

3. One voice, several teams

A tone of voice guide people can apply, with examples from your own channels rather than adjectives.

4. Planning across departments

A shared calendar and a way of resolving the week where four teams all want Tuesday.

5. Measurement that survives a board

The numbers worth reporting upwards, and how to stop reporting the ones that flatter.

6. Risk and escalation

What happens when something goes wrong at half past six, and who is allowed to decide.

7. Paid and organic together

Where budget actually belongs. See paid social media training.

8. AI across the organisation

Several teams using it, nobody agreeing how. See the AI policy workshop.

Why does corporate social media underperform?

Rarely because the people are not good enough. In larger organisations the usual causes are structural. Approval takes longer than the news cycle, so anything reactive dies waiting. Ownership is unclear, so the interesting content nobody explicitly owns never gets made. Brand guidelines were written for print and are quietly ignored. And reporting is built to look acceptable upwards rather than to inform a decision.

Training that ignores all this and teaches the platforms produces a room of people who agree it was interesting and change nothing on Monday. We spend most of the day on the structure, because that is where the loss is.

How does it work for a larger organisation?

Format Group size Best for Price excluding VAT
Private half day Up to six The core social team £1,200
Private full day Up to six Skills plus governance £1,800
Two sessions in one visit Two groups Central team and departmental posters Quoted
Programme across sites Multiple Rollout with consistent standards Quoted

For most organisations of this size the effective shape is one working session with the people who own social, then a shorter practical session for the departmental posters, run on the same visit. We will say if we think you need less than you are asking for.

Who runs the day?

Chris Norton delivering corporate social media training

I am Chris Norton and I run most of these sessions myself. I founded Prohibition, the PR, social and content agency behind this site, I have worked in public relations for more than twenty years, and I have been running training since 2009. I co-authored Share This Too, the social media handbook published by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.

We work with organisations including Interflora, Barbour, Lloyds Pharmacy, Watches of Switzerland, Savills, Transport for the North and Engie, alongside universities, NHS organisations and local authorities. Corporate structure is not something we have read about. It is the environment most of our client work happens in.

Corporate social media training questions

What is corporate social media training?

Training for organisations where social media spans several teams or accounts. It covers ownership, governance and sign off, consistent tone across departments, planning, measurement and risk, as well as the practical skills. At this size the coordination problem is usually larger than the skills problem.

How much does corporate social media training cost?

Half day £1,200 and full day £1,800 for up to six people, excluding VAT, priced by the group rather than per delegate. Rollouts across departments or sites are quoted, and usually work as one governance session plus shorter practical sessions.

How is this different from your small business training?

Different problem entirely. Small business training is for an owner or a small team doing everything themselves. This is for organisations where several people post, tone drifts, and nobody is certain who approves what.

Can you train departments separately?

Yes, and often that is the right structure. One session with the people who own social, then shorter practical sessions for departmental posters, run on the same visit so the standards match.

Do you help with governance and sign off?

Yes, and for most organisations of this size it is the part that changes the most. We map ownership and build a sign off process proportionate to risk, so routine posts stop queueing behind announcements.

Will you work with our brand and legal teams?

Gladly. Sessions where brand or legal are in the room produce decisions rather than requests, and the guidelines that come out survive contact with reality.

Do you deliver across multiple sites?

Yes. We travel UK wide and deliver online, and for multi site programmes we keep the same trainer throughout so the standard does not drift between locations.

What about AI across several teams?

It is now a governance question rather than a tools question, because different departments are using different tools with different rules. See the AI policy workshop.

What do we leave with?

An ownership map, a sign off process, a tone of voice guide with real examples, a reporting format and a ninety day plan with named owners. The ownership map is usually the document people quote back to us.
