I’d put money on the material that gets brands named in AI answers already sitting in your own team’s heads. Before the next budget round you have to decide whether to pay to train the in-house team on SEO and AI search, or keep relying on the agency or freelancer you already pay.
Train your in-house team when the work that decides AI search visibility is work only your people can do: answering buyers’ questions, writing from first-hand expertise and earning branded mentions. Keep an agency or freelancer for technical fixes and scale. We teach search and AI answer engines together in one private SEO and AI search training day, from £1,200 for half a day for up to six people, excluding VAT. A before-and-after test on the same prompts shows whether it worked.
SEO and AI search training for marketing teams is private instruction that teaches the people who publish your content to rank in Google and to get the brand cited by ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews and similar tools. This guide is for UK Heads of Marketing holding both a training budget and an agency contract. I run Social Media Training, which sells this training, so weigh my view accordingly.
Huthwaite International reported 55 Tier 1 leads generated through stakeholder profiling, more than £100,000 in business lead conversions and what it describes as 2,000+ topline ROI after we trained its senior people in strategic social media management and thought leadership content marketing. That programme was social media and thought leadership training, a close neighbour of SEO training, so read the case study as adjacent proof that the expertise behind branded mentions already sits inside your business. A trained team can publish it without waiting for an agency to discover it, which agencies do eventually, usually around month nine of the retainer.
Why does AI search change what a marketing team needs to know?
AI search changes what a marketing team needs to know because fewer people click through to websites: Ofcom’s discussion paper on answer engines (November 2025), citing Pew Research Center, reports that click-through to traditional links fell from 15% to 8% when a Google AI summary appeared. Ofcom’s Online Nation report (December 2025) found that ChatGPT had 1.8 billion UK visits in the first eight months of 2025, up from 368 million in the same period of 2024. A marketing team trained only to chase rankings now needs a new skill, getting the brand named inside AI answers, which depends on content and reputation the team already controls.
Search Engine Land (June 2026) reports that about 50% of marketers have seen traffic declines since AI Overviews launched, and 61% directly blame AI tools. Ask your agency for clicks and AI citations alongside positions, because steady rankings can hide that fall.
Kian Scott-Loach, Head of Digital at Terrence Higgins Trust, said of our trainers: “We were impressed by their depth of knowledge in a rapidly changing environment.” Rapid change is the top AI search challenge for marketers, named by 28% in Search Engine Land’s survey (August 2026), ahead of measuring visibility in AI results at 17%. When AI search shifts every few months, an in-house team that has learned the method can re-test its own buyer questions and adjust pages within a week, whereas a team waiting on an agency’s monthly report reacts a month late, so start today by typing your top five buyer questions into ChatGPT and noting which brands are named.
Which SEO and AI search tasks should your team own, and which should stay with an agency?
Your in-house team should own the search tasks that draw on knowledge of your customers, because Ahrefs research reported by Search Engine Land (June 2026) found that branded web mentions and YouTube impressions had the strongest correlations with AI visibility, scoring 0.50 to 0.74 on the Spearman scale, a moderate-to-strong link showing the two tend to rise together, though a correlation does not prove one causes the other. Those signals come from PR and thought leadership that people inside the business supply fastest, while an agency or freelancer earns its fee on technical fixes, migrations and specialist tooling. The table below is our recommended split for a team of up to six after a training day.
Who owns each search task after training: in-house team against agency or freelancer
| Task | Owner after training | Agency role | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category prompt audit | Content lead | None | Recommended first step (Search Engine Land) |
| Titles, headings, internal links | Content lead | Spot checks | No developer ticket needed |
| Answering buyers’ questions | Content lead and experts | None | Needs customer knowledge |
| Branded mentions | PR lead | Campaigns at scale | Linked to AI visibility (Search Engine Land) |
| Review of AI-assisted drafts | Named editor | None | Weak review stems partly from training gaps |
| Technical SEO and migrations | Agency or developer | Owns the work | Needs specialist tools |
| Before-and-after measurement | Head of Marketing | Supplies data | Proof shows what changed |
Take back title tags and content briefs first and technical work last, then rewrite the agency brief around what stays. Where your PR lead owns branded mentions, PR training for in-house teams pairs well with the search day, and our guide on what PR training is and who needs it explains the basics.
What should you find out about your team before booking training?
Find out what your team already does with AI before you book, because the Office for National Statistics (July 2026) reports that 55% of employees use AI for work or education, against around 35% of businesses reporting use of at least one AI technology. When we surveyed WWF International’s media relations team before its Copilot training, six of seven respondents already used Copilot Chat, and accuracy and hallucinations were their biggest worry. A short survey of usage and worries tells a trainer where to start and whether to split the room by level.
We shaped WWF International‘s programme around that worry, delivering three 90-minute live sessions, each run twice, for 8 participants across 4 countries, with a SAFE framework, prompt pack and recordings. The sessions ran from July to September 2026, with outcome measures due at the November 2026 follow-up. WWF’s feedback was “It’s been so excellent”, and the work led to an internal referral to its Head of Creative and Content.
Social Media Training’s survey of 53 Bango staff before their LinkedIn training found 62% weren’t sure what to post, 51% were not comfortable with analytics and 38% posted less than monthly. A room where most people lack ideas and half avoid the numbers cannot all be taught at one pace. We split the training by level into two sessions of up to 3 hours, one course for individuals and one for the marketing team, according to our Bango case study.
Send your own survey a fortnight before booking and ask the trainer what they will change because of it; to share yours with us, contact our training team.
What should your team do in the six weeks around a training day?
Run a six-week plan that starts with a baseline and ends with the same test repeated, beginning where Search Engine Land (August 2026) says current practice starts: identifying where AI search is already influencing your category. Give every week a named owner and diary the dates before you book your trainer, because a plan without owners stalls quickly once the trainer leaves. The plan assumes a team of up to six people with an agency still on contract, and puts the training day in week two.
In week one, you and your content lead run twenty buyer questions through ChatGPT and Google’s AI Overviews, noting which brands and sources appear, and export Search Console clicks for your ten key pages.
In week two, the whole team takes the training day on your own pages and agrees the ownership table.
In week three, your content lead rewrites titles and headings on your top five pages as buyers’ questions; our content marketing training for teams covers the writing in depth, and our guide on what content marketing is and what works for UK businesses gives the background.
In week four, your PR lead pitches two expert comments to earn branded mentions, and in week five a named editor checks every AI-assisted draft against a review checklist.
In week six, rerun the same prompts and export, and compare both with week one; doing this by hand beats buying a dashboard for now.
How do you tell whether SEO and AI search training has paid off?
Judge SEO and AI search training by what changed afterwards, since Search Engine Land’s guidance (August 2026) is that proof of AI search work should show what changed after the work was done. Test three levels: behaviour, meaning whether the team runs the prompt audit and human review unprompted; output, meaning pages rewritten and comments placed; and results, meaning whether the brand is named more often and Search Console clicks hold up. Keep the test simple, because 17% of marketers in the same survey named measuring visibility in AI-generated results as their top challenge.
Over a longer period, look for commercial results like Huthwaite International’s 55 Tier 1 leads and more than £100,000 in business lead conversions after our content marketing training. Review behaviour and output at week six and results at month three, then report all three levels to your Marketing Director.
How much should a UK marketing team budget for SEO and AI search training?
Our private SEO and AI search training is from £1,200 for half a day for up to six people, delivered at your offices anywhere in the UK, at our Leeds studio or live online. Prices exclude VAT, and HM Revenue & Customs guidance on VAT and vocational training (January 2025) says vocational training is exempt only when an eligible body supplies it, so private corporate training from a commercial company is generally standard-rated. Budget the net figure if you reclaim VAT and the gross if you cannot.
HMRC guidance also says consultancy aimed at improving how an organisation as a whole works does not count as vocational training.
Search Engine Land’s survey (August 2026) found marketers already allocate 24% of their search or content budget to AI search visibility. Charge the day to your training line and set it against the agency hours you take back.

Where we are not the right fit
If you want a certificate for one person’s CV, Semrush Academy’s free AI Visibility Essentials or HubSpot Academy’s free AI for Marketing course will serve better and cost nothing. Both suit one person learning alone at their own pace. If your problem is technical, such as a site migration, crawl errors or ecommerce indexing at scale, you need a technical SEO specialist.
If nobody in the team will have time after the day to rewrite pages or pitch comment, sort capacity first, or the training will fade. If you want someone else to keep doing the work every month, you need an agency retainer, and we would point you there. Our guide on whether to hire a LinkedIn or content agency or train your team sets out that choice.
What should you ask a trainer before booking SEO and AI search training?
Ask any trainer or agency the questions in the table below before you book, starting with measurement, since Search Engine Land (August 2026) advises that proof of AI search work should show what changed after the work was done. A strong answer is specific to your team, your pages and your buyers, and names who does what once the trainer has gone. A weak answer stays general and leaves measurement and VAT until after you have paid.

Questions to ask an SEO and AI search trainer, with strong and weak answers
| Question | Strong answer | Weak answer |
|---|---|---|
| Which prompts will you test before the day? | Our buyers’ real questions, run in ChatGPT and AI Overviews | “We’ll cover ChatGPT in general” |
| How will we know it worked? | A before-and-after test on the same prompts and pages | A certificate or feedback form |
| What will we own afterwards? | A task-by-task split, technical work left to the agency | “Everything” or “nothing” |
| Do you teach SEO and AI search together? | Yes, because the same decisions feed both | Two days, sold separately |
| Will you use our pages and Search Console? | Yes, live, with developer fixes listed | Generic slides |
| How do you handle AI accuracy? | A named reviewer and a checklist | “The tools are accurate enough” |
| How do you set the level? | A survey first, then split by level | One level for everyone |
| Is the price in sterling, excluding VAT? | Yes, with VAT shown separately | A dollar price or no VAT answer |
Frequently asked questions
How do you get your brand mentioned in ChatGPT answers?
Earn mentions of your brand on other trusted sites, publish video, and answer your buyers’ questions directly on your own pages. Ahrefs research reported by Search Engine Land (June 2026) found that branded web mentions and YouTube impressions had the strongest correlations with AI visibility. Track progress by rerunning the same buyer questions in ChatGPT every few months and noting which brands it names.
Is there a generative engine optimisation course in the UK?
Yes. Generative engine optimisation, the work of getting a brand cited in AI answers, is part of our private SEO and AI search training, delivered at your offices anywhere in the UK, at our Leeds studio or live online. We teach it alongside classic SEO in one day, because the same content and authority decisions feed both, and our prices are in sterling.
Is corporate SEO training exempt from VAT in the UK?
Usually not. HM Revenue & Customs guidance (January 2025) says vocational training is exempt from VAT only when an eligible body supplies it, so private training from a commercial company is generally standard-rated. Our prices are quoted excluding VAT, so budget the net figure if your organisation reclaims VAT and the gross figure if it cannot, keeping any consultancy on a separate line.
Can SEO and AI search training be delivered online for a remote team?
Yes. Our SEO and AI search training runs live online as well as in person, so a remote or hybrid team can work on its own pages and Search Console data together. WWF International’s media relations team took its Copilot training as live sessions with 8 participants across 4 countries, which shows the format suits a team spread across offices.
The answer box is now the shop window
Northumbria University reported that average online influence across the academics we trained rose by 59%, which is what happens when the people who hold the expertise learn to publish it themselves. Run your twenty buyer questions through ChatGPT this week, bring the screenshots, and Plan SEO and AI search training for your team, from £1,200 for half a day. You will find more practical guides on our Resources page. When the next screenshot shows ChatGPT naming three competitors and not you, who on your team will own the fix?
