Back in 2017, I created a social media timeline Infographic for my Agency and it appeared to go down really well with loads of people sharing it and discussing the different channels that had been, thrived and gone. However, that was more than three years ago and in social media terms, three months is long enough. So I thought I would revisit it and update the timeline for 2020.

New social platforms for new generations

It appears that every generation wants its own social channel. We had Friends ReUnited, then MySpace, then we had Facebook. We then moved to Snapchat in 2016 and now it appears the newbies are all about TikTok. Trust me it won’t end there either. But our insatiable appetite for social media means each generation goes through channel after channel to avoid the previous generation or worse still their parents.

Social Media Timeline for 2020 by Prohibition

Our 2020 Social Media Timeline is a mobile phone

Since 2017 we have had a lot of new sites arrive and disappear and so I felt it was a great time to take a fresh look over the social media landscape in 2020. We have created the infographic to look like a mobile phone screen to make it nice and easy to read. If you want to use it on your own blog and share it with your readers, please can you just copy the embed code and is should all paste in nicely.

I am pretty sure there is nobody out there that can name every single channel, I think most people will struggle with some of the more niche sites.

So grab a brew, sit back and reminisce about when social media wasn’t quite like what it is today in 2020. It was all so much easier back then when the Fail Whale used to make a regular appearance.
