About three months ago it was announced on Radio One that they were   changing their schedules, which meant the listeners no longer had to listen to JK & Joel – I will let you decide whether that is a good or bad thing?

However, I think they did get something wrong and that was to move Pete Tong’s Essential Selection slot from 6pm to 7pm.

It now means the listeners are subjected to Scott Mills from 6pm on a Friday. I really like Scott’s shows as I think he can be very funny and makes good imaginative radio normally – usually including the use of a megaphone in a quiet and private place. However, the music (Eurobeat)he is forced to play on the 6pm Friday slot is just plain awful.

As a dance music enthusiastic, my favourite slot for Radio 1 was always the Essential Selection. I used to enjoy listening to Tongy opening up and officially starting the weekend and I have many fond memories of getting ready to go out to parties, clubs and weddings.

In fact, sometimes if the the opening of the show was really strong with some great music, it would force me to record it, so I could listen to the latest tracks and then go out and spend all my cash on some collectable vinyl.

Now however, I find myself switching to listen to the news on Radio Five Live, as I just can’t listen to music which has a dance tempo but is so cheesy it should be mixed with a full bottle of Lea & Perrins.

Pete Tong’s show is still an institution and his music will continue to be popular as it has for the last 15 years – I say bring Tongy back to 6pm!
