Instagram profiting from our pictures makes me want to vomit

Instagram has just announced changes to its terms of service which have annoyed pretty much anyone, anywhere including me. The new TOS will come into affect from 16th January and this will include a number of new stipulations which have been described as the most significant changes in its history. It refers to how user photos can be used by the company and of course its most recent owner Facebook. These two points particularly caught my eye in its rights section: Some or all of the Service may be supported by advertising revenue. To help us deliver interesting paid or ... Read more

Random PR stunt of the week: Tweeting shoes by Adidas

The Olympics has had some brilliant PR moments and stunts. For instance, the PR person that said in a brainstorm “Why don’t we turn the local athlete’s post box gold when they win a medal?” deserves all the plaudits they get. It’s sometimes the simplest ideas that work the best. Add that to the beauty and honour of sharing a stamp with the queen and I think we can all agree that Royal Mail got it right for London 2012. So here is my random PR stunt of the week, I think the idea of tweeting from your shoes could ... Read more

What is the best time to post your content on social networks?

Check out this infographic from digital agency Raka Creative which has been created from data collated from link sharing service Bitly. No surprises that it is pretty much pointless sharing content after 3pm on a Friday afternoon although I tend to think this is the time when the most banter is had on that platform. Nobody mentions Google+ probably due to the fact we are only reportedly spending 3 minutes a month on it anyway, it’s become a bit of a social media ghost town that everyone knows they should be in but can’t be bothered to visit. Raka says ... Read more

Celebrating reading with the Great Book Migration

Over the last few weeks I have been working on an online campaign to help promote the joy of reading for my client Ultralase. As part of the campaign we have launched the Great Book Migration by leaving 100 books, from various genres and authors all around the country. These have been left anywhere interesting from large international airports through to local park benches and we are tracking the books using a number of methods including using the hashtag #bookmigrate. I find this campaign rather interesting to see if people will tell us where they found and left the books. ... Read more

Twitter application – donate your characters for charity

Today I came across a clever new twitter application that offers people the chance to donate the remaining characters from their tweets in order to raise awareness of the charity Help for Heroes. It is all part of a wider campaign called https://www.hashtags4heroes.com/. The campaign has been created for the whole month of May (which in PR terms is Military Appreciation Month) to raise awareness for Wounded Warrior Project (WWP) and injured service members. Every time a user tweets during the time period, the application will autofill any unused Twitter characters with messages that help  spread the word about their ... Read more

Facebook users say they will leave due to advertising but they wont

I have read some interesting research taken from Upstream’s 2012 Digital Advertising Attitudes Report on the fact that more than a quarter of British Facebook users will ditch the social network if they are subjected to more intrusive advertising. OK, so there is the main PR headline that they were looking for. In my view people say they will leave the social network but you and I both know that isn’t true. They will complain, they will rant and rave but then they will continue logging in to see what their friends are getting up too. The news release states: ... Read more

The Top 25 UK PR and social media blogs– in my humble opinion

This is a guest post written by good friend and colleague Zubair, you can follow him on Twitter @souljaof4tune and read his blog here. After a rather interesting discussion with Chris about some really good PR and social media blogs out there and the realisation that no one has a made a list of the very best (we all love a good list – don’t we?) in a long time. I decided to create this, the top 25 UK PR and social media blogs. Using the Ad Age Power 150, a list of the top English language marketing blogs. I ... Read more

Ten reasons why Tweetdeck’s latest update is terrible

Now I have been a fan for Tweetdeck for a number of years, I have recommended it at events I have spoken at and even given one on one training courses to people as I thought it was a great tool. The product has always previously been created in Adobe Air making it a pretty slick package to use and it usually updated quickly. Today I have downloaded the latest version and I am not a fan at all. I should point out that I use Tweetdeck to manage around 15 different profiles and I have done it pretty easily ... Read more

KLM’s social media strategy video long but pretty good

Here is an interesting video that has been created for/by the airline KLM on its social media strategy which I got from one of my local friends David Turner – so hat tip to him. I have to admit when I opened it and saw it was nine and a half minutes long, I thought there is no way am I watching this, but I actually stuck it out for once and it was fairly impressive. I have worked for a couple of airlines before and I like to follow what they get up to in the social world as ... Read more
