WARNING BRANDS NEED TO STOP BUYING FACEBOOK LIKES

It amazes me that there are clients out there in the big wide world in 2019 that still want to buy Facebook followers. Those working in social media marketing know that followers are nothing but a vanity metric. I go through the motions advising clients this and they nod their heads in agreement, but sometimes they stop me and simply say they have to grow the page anyway.  I can see the predicament and I suppose they do still have a point. The main reason is usually that they want these new Facebook numbers just to show that their brand ... Read more

Here’s the reason why Facebook stories are failing

On the first day, Evan Spiegal created Snapchat. On the second day, Mark Zuckerberg pioneered a huge infiltration of clone after clone of the Snapchat stories feature, with every branch of the Facebook family tree miraculously adding an almost identical version of the mobile app’s features to its platforms. This copycat movement led firstly by Instagram and shortly after followed by Facebook and WhatsApp (yeah, I’d forgotten about WhatsApp stories already as well). With every social platform copying the feature, the social media marketing world watched with interest. The situation becoming such a joke, that stories instigated a meme coined ... Read more

Are Instagram business profiles the end for organic reach?

As of April 2016, Instagram had around 400 million users worldwide and is one of the fastest growing social networks. It is based solely on image and video content uploads, of which there are more than 80 million posted every day. A popular social media platform for both users and brands, so it’s hardly surprising that Instagram has just announced it plans to launch business friendly tools that provide insights into engaging posts and audience. If I am honest it is a bit late, I have been moaning for a number of years that it’s platform needed to be better ... Read more

Great Instagram Engagement campaign by Audi

I came across this clip on YouTube on a brilliant social media campaign by Audi in Sweden. The campaign was created to highlight the the power of its quattro four-wheel drive system. The team created a competition where they challenged Instagram users to capture the most unexplored place in Sweden, where the closest Instagram photo is miles away. The campaign used the hashtag #CatchTheUnseen and utilised its Twitter channel @AudiSweden. It reached more than 500,000 Instagram users and targeted influencers on the platform. The prize for the winner of the competition was a brand new Q7 which is a very ... Read more

Report: Instagram is officially the platform of choice for brand engagement

I read some interest thoughts the other day, extensive research carried out by business intelligence tool L2 revealed that an increasing amount of brands are migrating from Facebook and focusing their attention on the use of Instagram. This surge in migrant users is not limited to brands; Instagram has grown from 100-300 million active users in only the last two years and I myself have noticed it really taking off for some of the clients we work with.  You can follow me on Instagram here. These new users of the photo-sharing app are apparently young, impressionable, and tech savvy. Studies ... Read more

Instagram profiting from our pictures makes me want to vomit

Instagram has just announced changes to its terms of service which have annoyed pretty much anyone, anywhere including me. The new TOS will come into affect from 16th January and this will include a number of new stipulations which have been described as the most significant changes in its history. It refers to how user photos can be used by the company and of course its most recent owner Facebook. These two points particularly caught my eye in its rights section: Some or all of the Service may be supported by advertising revenue. To help us deliver interesting paid or ... Read more

How to effectively measure the power of Pinterest!

Pinterest is still the social network of the moment despite Instagram making waves over the last twelve months. You simply cannot fail to fall over the “Pin It” buttons which are now appearing all over our favourite websites. As part of a wider digital strategy I recently recommended that one of my online retailer clients add the “Pin It” button to their site and although this was only a couple of months ago, Pinterest has already become the number one social media referrer of traffic beating Facebook, Twitter and others into submission. The fundamental reason for this is people pin or ... Read more
