Here’s the reason why Facebook stories are failing

On the first day, Evan Spiegal created Snapchat. On the second day, Mark Zuckerberg pioneered a huge infiltration of clone after clone of the Snapchat stories feature, with every branch of the Facebook family tree miraculously adding an almost identical version of the mobile app’s features to its platforms. This copycat movement led firstly by Instagram and shortly after followed by Facebook and WhatsApp (yeah, I’d forgotten about WhatsApp stories already as well). With every social platform copying the feature, the social media marketing world watched with interest. The situation becoming such a joke, that stories instigated a meme coined ... Read more

Marketers don’t be fooled – blogging still isn’t dead – the proof

So last week was rather busy, the team at Prohibition and I went out to the CIPR Pride Awards for Yorkshire & Lincolnshire and thankfully we scooped another award – this year it was “Best Consumer Relations Campaign” for a campaign we did for Interflora. However, before that I was discussing the digital landscape with a potential employee, and they expressed their thoughts to me that blogging was now dead. This struck me as a bold statement, they were younger than me and although I know blogging is not in its 2000s hey day – I still felt it was ... Read more

We help Interflora give one lucky individual the best birthday ever (Video)

This week has been really rather busy, with the phones ringing off the hook. Following on from our integrated campaign late last year with Interflora in which we discovered the best and worst times of year to celebrate your birthday (Daily Mail), we used the trusty Birthday calculator app we created to help identify the very best date, which was found to be today! (July 28th) Tasked by the client with highlighting this special day in July, we commissioned some social media listening to identify insights and decided to deliver an experiential stunt to raise awareness and share the love. ... PR Interviews: Heather Baker Editor of the B2B PR Blog

As you are probably aware over the last few months I have been interviewing PR practitioners from all over the world as part of my interview series called 20:20 Vision. The concept of these interviews is that I ask each practitioner 20 questions about themselves and they give us a brief glimpse into their working lives and what makes them tick. Most of the people I speak with will have a strong interest in digital, online or modern public relations strategy. The first interview was with Arik C. Hanson and a while ago I interviewed Crosby Noricks the founder of ... Read more

Are we seeing the slow painful death of Google Alerts?

Over the last couple of months I have been really busy giving my usual lectures to my lovely PR and Journalism students at Leeds Beckett University and one of the presentations I have crafted is on the Future of Social Media listening which covers the issues and different elements modern PR practitioners need to consider when listening and identifying important issues online. I won’t bore you with the full details but I cover a wide variety of elements in the seminar including the beautiful graphical Enterprise solutions right down to the free monitoring tools and let’s face it no free ... Ignore Google Guest Blogging is not dead here’s why

Guest blogging was called into question recently by Google’s head of Webspam Matt Cutts, who said in his latest provocative post that “people should put a fork in it.” A lot of people have talked about this but I have my own opinion and I thought it was worth sharing. I’m going to explain why guest posting still has its place and can provide benefits as long as it’s done spam-free and to best-practice.  Cutts said that guest writing for blogs has become dominated by SEO companies, using nasty links to increase exposure and in turn making the practice more ... So I have had a lot going on recently, following my company re-brand and last night the Prohibition team ventured out into Leeds to the Pride Awards to see if we could pick up an award or two. We were shortlisted for “Best Use of Digital” and “Best Use of Social Media” for the team’s launch of Student Wire which is now recognised as one of the UK’s leading student magazines. According to the ... Read more

Cannabis and Crisis Management

Its been a busy few months at Prohibition HQ and so I have been busy sorting out a number of new account wins. My next post will have some big news on that front but I will save that for later. However, here are two stories that caught my eye by offering a humorous and slightly worrying side to the news in the social web this week, both of which involve images of cannabis and poor regulation on behalf of Instagram and the housing brand Rightmove. Instagram,  the world renowned photo based social site that helps people share their dinner ... Read more
