PR stunt of the week goes to Alton Towers

The PR stunt of the week, so far OK so it’s only Monday, has to go to Alton Towers. The reason is the team there have managed to get national coverage on the fact the new ride “Nemesis Sub-Terra” ride has been classed for the over 12s by the British Board of Film and Classification. As soon as I read that I thought – genius move. This was obviously carefully thought through to make it sound very, very scary and even the board admitted they had never classified a ride before. So that get’s a big tick from me as ... Read more

Case Study: Using social media to properly engage with animal lovers

This week has been a tad hectic because I have been away until today on paternity leave following the birth of my second child Harvey. However, before I went away I had spent a number of weeks with my team preparing a social media campaign for my brilliant client Monster Pet Supplies to help increase engagement and improve relationships with key pet influencers and improve awareness of the brand in social media. Following some extensive online research and analysis of conversations taking place online around pets together we devised a strategy of creating a place where all of the pet ... Read more

Video: The Intel Ultrabook™ POP-UP THEATRE flash mob stunt

I have just found this video on the Digital Buzz blog posted by Katy Daniells and I have to say it’s brilliant. I love a good stunt type video and this take on flash mobbing to demonstrate the product is superb. The concept is get a lot of people together and sit them next to each other and get them to make one huge picture out of around 60 digital screens. The guys sit next to a basket ball court in the US somewhere and create an interactive crowd for a few people – total genius. A nice stunt that ... Read more

Three useful sites for digital PRs looking to evaluate sites

This week I have been doing quite a bit of analysis and research into bloggers and online influencers. This has become part of my day job reading, researching and engaging and I am often asked by other PR professionals to give recommendations on some of the tools that I use. So I thought a quick post on a few might help. To make this test fair I have used a local theme park that my family and I like to visit called Flamingo Land as I thought it would be a bit more fun that the usual corporate stuff. 1. ... Read more

KLM’s social media strategy video long but pretty good

Here is an interesting video that has been created for/by the airline KLM on its social media strategy which I got from one of my local friends David Turner – so hat tip to him. I have to admit when I opened it and saw it was nine and a half minutes long, I thought there is no way am I watching this, but I actually stuck it out for once and it was fairly impressive. I have worked for a couple of airlines before and I like to follow what they get up to in the social world as ... Read more

The power of a positive review –don’t be scared to lead from the front!

I was reading an article the other day that claimed a positive review on Trip Advisor was now worth £10,000 and hotel owners are now being blackmailed for discounts and threatened with negative reviews if they don’t give them. The article stated: Dozens of customers are using the website’s increasing power to try and get free upgrades or refunds despite nothing wrong with their accommodation. Industry experts have said that a bad rating or review on the popular ratings site can be costly, sometimes to the tune of tens of thousands of pounds in lost bookings. To be honest I ... Read more

Linked-in connections: What’s the point of a connection with someone you are never likely to meet or know?

In recent weeks, I have been receiving an increasing amount of Linked-in connection requests and it has got me thinking. Now firstly I should point out I have a love hate relationship with Linked-in, some things I love about it and some things I hate. Also you don’t need to tell me about the benefits of connecting to people you have done business with or have met out a events. Linked-in is a brilliant platform for connecting to these people and sharing knowledge. The more connections you have on the platform the wider your search results go and in that ... Read more

A quick rant: Social media should be used strategically not tactically

Sorry about this but I need to have a quick rant. I have been working in PR for more than a decade and using social media for around five years and the shift I have seen in the understanding levels of social media marketing has been great as the industry develops. I saw a piece the other day about Sony hiring one agency to do everything and thought, brilliant, people are finally getting it. However, one of my big bug bears now is that people seem to want to use social media on a purely tactical basis rather than actually ... Read more

I am speaking at the Social Media Panel event in Leeds tomorrow

Are you busy tomorrow? If not, you might want to make your way over to the Adelphi on Hunslet Road as I am speaking at a free seminar on the benefits of using social media for business. It’s the second of four seminars to be held by the organisers of this year’s Leeds Digital Festival. I attended the launch of the Festival’s new identity last week that I wrote about on Prohibition’s blog. The Yorkshire Evening Post covered the event the other day. It is kind of a Q&A session with some of the leading lights on social media in ... Read more

A huge PR opportunity opens as tweets, votes and social media signals are confirmed to boost search rankings

So last week I attended a meeting down in Kent with a very senior SEO expert (who shall remain nameless) but who runs a large digital team. He called me and my colleagues in to discuss the possibility of helping them create some interesting and engaging online campaigns. I am always interested when I meet senior people from the SEO world as they often have a different take on things to us public relations types and I find it kind of refreshing to talk about the more geeky side of digital. I asked him how important he now felt social ... Read more
