Rant: Why Facebook has a big problem with its advertising

Facebook’s rise and rise is well documented and continually coveted everywhere from The Times through to the highest profile social media bloggers. It is always lauded as the best platform since sliced bread however I have a few gripes and I just don’t understand why they haven’t fixed them already. Facebook – The Advertising Platform I understand why, although irritating, how important Facebook advertisements are as part of a seeding strategy and making people aware of a Facebook campaign. However, all you need to do if you really want Facebook to get on your nerves is have a play with ... Read more

Facebook’s want button is coming but what about this new feature

There has been a lot of chatter around lately about the development of a Facebook “I want” button. This new button is being heralded as a step further into social commerce. The opportunity for the button is that it will allow people to clearly see who wants what rather than simply liking something. Many are describing it as the first virtual wish list. I would imagine it will also tie nicely into it’s advertising algorithm, which is if I am honest rather basic when compared with Google’s. For instance, just because you like a page doesn’t necessarily mean we like ... Read more

Combining gardening and social media – yes really?

This week we have just been putting the finishing touches to this new Facebook application called The Messy Garden which we have had built for a client. The client has issued some academic research on sustainable gardens and the benefits of having a messy section in your garden to attract bees and other insects. The brief for this campaign was to make sustainable gardening more accessible and to reach out to a new demographic that doesn’t normally think about gardening. The team are doing a great job on the usual traditional media relations campaign which includes us showcasing a garden ... Read more

Case Study: Using social media to properly engage with animal lovers

This week has been a tad hectic because I have been away until today on paternity leave following the birth of my second child Harvey. However, before I went away I had spent a number of weeks with my team preparing a social media campaign for my brilliant client Monster Pet Supplies to help increase engagement and improve relationships with key pet influencers and improve awareness of the brand in social media. Following some extensive online research and analysis of conversations taking place online around pets together we devised a strategy of creating a place where all of the pet ... Read more

Facebook launches invite friends and email contacts to pages

I have just logged into my Facebook pages today and noticed something rather interesting. Facebook seems to have rolled out a new feature that allows you to invite your Facebook friends to your Facebook page. This takes me back a few years when they used to do that with Facebook groups but I beleive they removed it due to the amount of spamming that was happening because of the feature. The inability to invite people to pages is one of the reasons there are so many companies out there using Facebook wrongly and adding friends to a standard Facebook profiles. ... Read more

My quick tips to improve a Facebook page in 10 mins for free

If you are like me I imagine you have read quite a few posts before that give the usual advice about writing interesting and engaging content. Well I didn’t want to write something completely about the theory because I am always covering that type of stuff on here. As most of you know I manage a lot of social media communities for companies and brands of all sizes some regional, some national and others on a global basis. One thing I have noticed is that things have changed significantly in social media and online PR over the last 2-3 years. ... Read more

Which Premier League club is the biggest according to Facebook fans/likes?

This is the first of three posts I plan to do on the Premier League’s use of social media. I was doing some desktop research for a client the other day and I came across Man Utd’s Facebook page and I noticed it had more than 11 million likes and it got me wondering what amount of likes the other clubs could get, and whether the real table would reflect my Facebook likes table. So I have completed a review of each of the club’s Facebook pages and sorted them by the amount of likes they have. The first thing ... Read more

Facebook adds new ‘just interested’ feature to Facebook pages

Facebook has announced today that due to popular demand it is adding a new button/feature to Facebook pages. Traditionally, users were asked to become fans of a page but that was changed a few months back. Facebook users are now asked to like a particular product or service and when they do this like is then added to their personal profile. This is also what Facebook uses to select which advertisements to display in a user’s account. When a user has liked a product or service they then receive all of the updates from that page within their newsfeed. This ... Read more

Is Facebook hurting small businesses by stopping on page competitions

In December 2009 Facebook made a few adjustments to its formal policy on competitions and promotions which you no doubt will have heard about. The net result was that promotions on Facebook can’t hold: Photo contests which require profile photo manipulation Status updates which require posting updates for entry Only contest entries once a user has become a fan of your page A couple of my clients have been liaising directly with Facebook over this and we have found out that you can actually hold a competition on your page if you support it will £5,000 worth of Facebook advertising. ...
