My freelance journey and how I almost lost everything – Socially Unacceptable Podcast

We have had a busy time in PPR HQ recently recording quite a lot of new podcasts and today I’m thrilled to share a captivating episode where I had the privilege of sitting down with the brilliant Paul Sutton. Now I have known Paul for well over a decade and he has a whopping two decades of digital marketing expertise under his belt. He is not just a successful PR freelancer (PR Freelancer of the Year) but he was also the mastermind behind a luxury pet accessories business that he has never talked openly about before now. First and foremost, ... Read more

The Future of Public Relations

This is a guest post written by Tom Jones (no not the singer) an intern at my agency Prohibition that has impressed me whilst he has been working with us. I asked him to give me a master student’s view of what the future of PR is today. I teach a lot of students at Leeds Beckett University and they have a very different take on the industry compared with those of us already working on the coalface, so I felt like it would be interesting to hear his thoughts. So hear is the article he provided me on the topic. As ... Read more

Five Critical Trends in Digital PR You Must Act On

In September, the PRCA launched a new report into digital trends in the PR industry. Put together after a YouGov study of 228 agency and in-house PR professionals across a wide range of sectors, the results are, for me, both encouraging and worrying. As a top line summary, there are five key points to consider. Digital remains the big growth area in PR. This really should come as a surprise to no-one. I hope. Agency and in-house skill sets continue to grow, which makes common sense considering the growth in digital and practitioners having no choice but to skill up. ... Read more

Digital journalism is alive but is digital PR?

Today the BBC announced that it is cutting almost 500 jobs but reinvesting in a further 195 posts to back what it calls ‘digital journalism’. So I think we can safely say that digital journalism is where the BBC believes the future of that industry is headed. Several years have now passed since the birth of Web 2.0 and the social media bandwagon has rolled out of many towns because most of us are now used to using social media. The media industry has also adapted – albeit slowly – its practices to use it as a credible source/resource to ... Read more

Speaking at the CIPR’s Social Media Conference 2013

I am proud to announce that I will be speaking at the CIPR’s “Share This Live” Social Media Conference 2013.  Last year I wrote a quick blog post on Share This, a book that I recommend all PR professionals should try and read in order to stay up to speed with developments in the industry. The book contained practical advice from 20 experienced practitioners on how to move into digital PR from a number of different perspectives.  After, I had written the article I was then contacted by a friend of mine, Stephen Waddington the editor and one of the ... A quick rant: Social media should be used strategically not tactically

Sorry about this but I need to have a quick rant. I have been working in PR for more than a decade and using social media for around five years and the shift I have seen in the understanding levels of social media marketing has been great as the industry develops. I saw a piece the other day about Sony hiring one agency to do everything and thought, brilliant, people are finally getting it. However, one of my big bug bears now is that people seem to want to use social media on a purely tactical basis rather than actually ... Read more

The perfect blogger outreach campaign – infographic

I was reading my feeds this morning and came across this little gem from our friend Darren Rowse at Problogger. He has put together a nice infogrpahic on what makes the perfect blogger outreach campaign. I have worked on a lot of blogger outreach campaigns over the last few years and one of the first things I ask the client is what is in it for the blogger and his/her readers not just your marketing campaign? If there isn’t anything in it for both of them and the company then I tell them that it isn’t right for blogger outreach ... Read more

New social media study reveals more than half start a corporate blog for SEO goals

I am always reading (or viewing infographics) on the latest statistics about Facebook’s mobile usage increasing, Bebo being on the decline and more recently MySpace teaming up with Facebook as it moves away from being a social network to being seen as an entertainment platform. However, the study that has stood out to me this week has one been undertaken by Seomoz which looked into why people start blogs and use social media. An article in emarketer states: Nearly 71% of respondents said they use social media as part of their SEO strategy. Improving visibility was the primary reason nearly ... Read more

Integration is now the key to effective public relations

I have been busy this last week preparing and then running a social media workshop with a new client. Basically, my team and I assessed the client’s current status quo and then held a workshop to ask why it was doing what it was doing. I am now drawing up a list of detailed recommendations but whilst engaged in this process I came to the conclusion that integration is now key to public relations. Here is my reasoning: it’s all very admirable having set yourself up on Twitter, building a new fancy blog, creating a Facebook page, skinning a new ... Read more

Public relations and the digital frontier

Tonight I am going to be busy attending a CIPR event entitled ‘PR and the digital Frontier’. It’s being held at Leeds Metropolitan University and I am going in my role as the social media coordinator for the CIPR in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire. My colleague Beth Kay and I will also be going to catch up with a few former colleagues and hopefully say hello to our friend Richard Bailey. The speaker who will be discussing all things social media will be Rob Brown formerly of McCann Eriksson. Interestingly, while on the topic of CIPR. The CIPR Facebook group I ... Read more
