AI-Powered Marketing and PR: Navigating the Future of Creativity and Communication

As a professional in the marketing and PR industry, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is already starting to revolutionise our field, offering unprecedented opportunities to enhance creativity, streamline content creation, and improve crisis communications. However, this rapid advancement has also brought about significant ethical and legal concerns, requiring us to tread carefully and responsibly. This caused me and Will to say – we should discuss this on the podcast and highlight some of the things that are good and some of the things we should maybe be considering. AI has emerged as a powerful ... Read more

The Decline of PR Degrees in the UK: Understanding the Factors Behind the Trend

‍In recent years, there has sadly been a noticeable decline in the number of undergraduate PR degree courses and graduates in the UK. This trend has raised concerns among industry professionals and academics alike. I was a PR Graduate myself back in 2000 and then I was invited back to teach digital PR and social media at Leeds Beckett University to the undergrads and Masters students. However, I was prompted to write about this as Leeds Beckett closed its PR Degree earlier this year and I have seen quite a few people talking about it on Twitter. Insert examples: #preducation ... How to Use ChatGPT to Streamline Your PR Processes

In the last four months, I have seen a ton of clever marketing and comms people writing about the effect that ChatGPT is going to have on our sector and it prompted me to write something myself that would help people who don’t know everything about it just yet. Now as a tech PR blogger and all round geek I have used it a fair bit, and tested it on various bits and pieces and it is amazing for giving you a helping hand and I think you will be surprised by the results. Public relations involves the strategic use ... Read more

My little Leeds PR Agency scoops two PRCA Dare Awards

So last week, it was a rather strange but rather cheerful Tuesday for team Prohibition as we attended the PRCA Dare awards for the first time ever last week. After lots of pontificating on my part we finally managed to sign up and join the PRCA this year. It is a great organisation, I just hadn’t got around to joining. So we also decided to enter and I am pleased to reveal that we won two awards – ‘Medium Consultancy of the Year’ and the ‘B2B Award’ for our dedicated B2B content campaign with our lovely client Fentimans. Taking home the ... Read more

Does Public Relations have an Ethics Problem?

PR has faced a long fight to be considered an ethical profession. The industry’s association with ‘spin’, propaganda and cover-ups has led to many practitioners abandoning public relations titles altogether and rebranding as ‘communicators’. I’m sure the vast majority of PRs do strive to conduct campaigns in as morally sound way as possible however it is the case that when there are a few acting in a way that is unethical it damages the reputation of the industry as a whole. Here I will discuss why PR ethics has become a hot topic in recent weeks and why ethical practice ... Read more

PR’s mental health crisis – 6 tips for coping with lockdown

I love working in PR but there is no denying that it can be a stressful job. There’s pressure to come up with campaign ideas, tight deadlines, difficult to please clients and even more difficult to please journalists – I recently gave my opinion on the long-running trend of ‘PR bashing’ feel free to share your stories with me as they can be fascinating. Even before the pandemic, it was clear that many PR professionals were struggling with the burden of stress from this sector. The CIPR’s 2019 State of the Profession survey reported one-in-five respondents having a diagnosed mental ... Read more

PR bashing: the “hope you’re well’ debate.

This year has got off to a somewhat rocky start for everyone living in the UK as we all cope with the horrible third national lockdown. I am thrilled that my team has been able to continue delivering fantastic work for our clients this past month however, I am less thrilled about the recent ‘PR bashing’ I have seen on social media. In case you didn’t know PR bashing is a trend (not really a new one) where journalists take to Twitter to share emails or other forms of communication, they have received from PRs to call out behaviour they ... Prohibition PR gets listed in top 15 PR companies in the North

I’ve just returned from a lovely family holiday in the Lakes last week and I got back to some brilliant news. The North’s top PR Agencies While I was away I was notified, by one of our team, that the Prolific North top 50 PR agencies had been revealed and we had been included in it again and better still moved up the table. This caused me to “Whoop Whoop” – you have to celebrate these things. Now I know this isn’t going to go on forever. We’ve been lucky enough to make the list for the last five years ... Read more

Reputation is everything in business (video)

I thought this video was interesting today, this is the CIPR interviewing Danske Bank’s Vicky Davies and she speaks very eloquently on the fact that reputation is now everything in business. I find this clip quite refreshing as most companies see us PR people as purely press release machines. It’s so good to see a senior board member believing in what PR can help to achieve and maintain – a much better reputation. Often the only time a marketer realises the importance of communications is when the proverbial hits the fan and you need a PR team to deal ... Read more

Book review: The Art and Craft of PR

So a couple of weeks ago I was contacted online and asked if I would be interested in receiving a free copy of the new book: The Art and Craft of PR by Sandra Stahl. For those of you that haven’t heard of her, Sandra is a co-founder of the PR agency, Jacobstahl, Adjunct Professor in the Branding and Integrated Communications master’s degree program at The City College of New York, and now a published author. She has more than 30 years of experience in communications. This book is apparently aimed at focusing on the truth about public relations. In Sandra’s ... Read more
