THE SECRET BARRISTER BOOK REVIEW

I love to read and I am always interested to read blogs that have become books and this example is no different. The Secret Barrister was the Independent Blog of the Year in 2017 and I managed to read it over a couple of weeks whilst out in Spain last month and I found it both shocking and infuriating at the same time. The book is brilliantly written by a barrister who is doing the job that they love but finding it hugely frustrating and saddening. He goes into lots of detail about what is great, and more interestingly, what ... Read more

Book review: The Art and Craft of PR

So a couple of weeks ago I was contacted online and asked if I would be interested in receiving a free copy of the new book: The Art and Craft of PR by Sandra Stahl. For those of you that haven’t heard of her, Sandra is a co-founder of the PR agency, Jacobstahl, Adjunct Professor in the Branding and Integrated Communications master’s degree program at The City College of New York, and now a published author. She has more than 30 years of experience in communications. This book is apparently aimed at focusing on the truth about public relations. In Sandra’s ... Read more

Managing an Online Reputation – A practical book for dealing with a social media crisis

This is my review of a book called Managing Online Reputation: How to Protect Your Company on Social Media which is a book is written by Charlie Powell and produced by Palgrave Pocket Consultants. I read it over the Christmas holidays whilst watching far too many movies and drinking too much beer, it is one of the first books that has been outreached to me, that genuinely interested me, as I felt the outreach was well targeted because I love online crisis management and cover it quite a lot here on the blog. Charlie Pownall used to be the regional managing director at Burston Marstellar amongst ... Read more

Should leaders really eat last? Book review

If you read this blog regularly you will know that I like to read a lot of self development books mainly because I have always followed the ethos “You don’t know what you don’t know” so I try to pick up a different book whenever I get the chance. Over the last fortnight I have been reading Leaders Eat Last by Simon Simentek. The book describes itself as follows: Today’s workplaces tend to be full of cynicism, paranoia and self-interest. But the best organisations foster trust and cooperation because their leaders build what Sinek calls a Circle of Safety. It ... Read more

Book Review: Seth Godin’s Linchpin

I have just finished reading Linchpin by the genius artist that is Seth Godin. He of course wouldn’t claim to be a genius but that’s the point of the whole thing. A linchpin is described as: A person or thing vital to an enterprise or organisation. In his book Godin takes you through his thinking of why most of us are cogs in the wider system and how we are all trained to be good employees through school, university and then again in our jobs. We are trained to follow orders and make the machine work in what he describes as ... Read more

Speaking at the CIPR’s Social Media Conference 2013

I am proud to announce that I will be speaking at the CIPR’s “Share This Live” Social Media Conference 2013.  Last year I wrote a quick blog post on Share This, a book that I recommend all PR professionals should try and read in order to stay up to speed with developments in the industry. The book contained practical advice from 20 experienced practitioners on how to move into digital PR from a number of different perspectives.  After, I had written the article I was then contacted by a friend of mine, Stephen Waddington the editor and one of the ... The one book online PR professionals must read

Unless you have been hidden under a rather large rock over the last twelve months you can’t have missed the splash that the Official CIPR Social Media Handbook “Share This” has made in the PR community. As I live in the freezing cold north of England and my agency’s HQ is in Leeds I don’t tend to get to as many conferences these days as I would like and so I read a lot of books and online media on digital marketing. I bought “Share This” a while back because I wanted to find a book that offered practical advice ... Read more

Rich Dad Poor Dad – Review

I have been on holiday for a couple of weeks and whilst I was away sunning myself and trying to stop my little boy from diving in the deep end of the hotel pool, I read a couple of books which I would like to share with you in case you were looking for something to read. The first book I read was Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaksi. This book is an easy to read life story about somebody who grew up with a real dad who is a teacher (poor dad – although not that poor) and ... Read more

Book review: Barack Obama “Dreams from my father”

I have just finished reading a book written by the current US president. Don’t worry he wrote it before he got the job. Basically, it is his story of how he grows up in Hawaii apart from his father who lives back in Kenya. It is a really heart warming story of his quest to fit in in and to make a difference. A particular poignant part of the book is when he reaches New York and has to sleep the night in a back alley as he has no money and nowhere to stay. I suppose the book gives ... Read more
