Social media and crisis management – infographic

I have been writing about online crisis management for years because as you know I do love a good crisis and helping out is one. It’s actually the topic I covered in Share This Too last year and more recently in an article for E-Consultancy. Anyways I have come across this fine infographic on the topic and although I don’t like everything I thought it was rather interesting.

A Social Media Timeline in 2014

Earlier this week my team and I launched a piece of work looking at the evolution of social media in 2014. I wrote a blog about the ten channels which I felt had changed the face of the social web. Some people agree and some have pointed out other platforms that could have been included. The truth is there are thousands and we picked the majority we felt had really stood out over time. If you want to see which were my top ten you can read the post here. Courtesy of: Prohibition

Are students using social media differently to the rest of us?

At my agency Prohibition you are probably aware we run one of the UK’s leading student magazines, Student Wire, and subsequently, we have become specialists in student/youth marketing, advising clients and brands of all sizes into how they can engage with this notoriously fickle audience. This has been widened even further with me lecutring at a number of Universities over the last couple of years but I actually enjoy it. Social media touches every age group, from teens on Whatsapp, Instagram, Vine and Snapchat through to an older market and business professionals on LinkedIn. With its wide spectrum of ages, ... The death of Edgerank: How To Optimize For Facebook’s Newsfeed Algorithm

As you may have heard, Facebook EdgeRank is no more. A Facebook insider confirmed that the term [EdgeRank] is no longer being used internally (and hasn’t been for over two years) and noted that there are currently over 100,000 factors that go into what a user sees on their News Feed when users log into Facebook. While Facebook has not explicitly told us what these factors are, they have shed some light on  the process involved in developing their most recent ranking algorithm update. The company surveyed thousands of users, asking questions to help determine what exactly makes a “high-quality” Facebook Page post. ... Read more

Is Facebook about to ruin our newsfeeds?

I think it’s fair to say that Facebook has witnessed exponential growth since launching all those years ago back in 2004. The current user base stands at 1.15 billion from all areas of the globe and of all age ranges from 13 upwards. The truth is the world is now heavily under the influence of the services that it provides but recently the tide has started to change with recent figures showing for the first time Facebook’s numbers have started to recede.  In April 2013 social bakers reported that users in the US had dropped by six million for the ... Social Media Policy: Guarding Your Brand against PR Disasters

When actors get bad publicity, we often hear people say that even bad publicity is still publicity, implying that it doesn’t matter much what type of publicity an actor gets as long as it succeeds in making people aware of his existence. Is this philosophy true of businesses getting negative comments on social media as well? Can bad publicity still be good news for your brand? Unfortunately, that may not be the case. How you are perceived in social media often has a direct impact on your company’s general image and reputation. To avoid PR disasters via social media, you ... Read more

Speaking at the CIPR’s Social Media Conference 2013

I am proud to announce that I will be speaking at the CIPR’s “Share This Live” Social Media Conference 2013.  Last year I wrote a quick blog post on Share This, a book that I recommend all PR professionals should try and read in order to stay up to speed with developments in the industry. The book contained practical advice from 20 experienced practitioners on how to move into digital PR from a number of different perspectives.  After, I had written the article I was then contacted by a friend of mine, Stephen Waddington the editor and one of the ... The one book online PR professionals must read

Unless you have been hidden under a rather large rock over the last twelve months you can’t have missed the splash that the Official CIPR Social Media Handbook “Share This” has made in the PR community. As I live in the freezing cold north of England and my agency’s HQ is in Leeds I don’t tend to get to as many conferences these days as I would like and so I read a lot of books and online media on digital marketing. I bought “Share This” a while back because I wanted to find a book that offered practical advice ... Read more

Fifteen ways to create stunning social media content

It’s that special magical moment we are all looking for, brilliantly written content that people actually like, love and share. Content that goes viral across the globe on its own and content that makes you or your client’s website stand out from the competition. I have been writing on my own Dead Dinosaur blog for more than six years now, and the main problem with being a blogger or community manager is deciding what to write about and comment on. You sit there scratching your head sometimes thinking what is it that makes our readers chat online? What do they ... Read more

PR Stunt: Ultralase blurs out the best bits on Page 3

Sorry for the outrageous bit of self promotion in this post but I had to share this one with you guys.  A few months ago my colleagues and I at Lucre had a discussion/brainstorm/thought shower for one of our client’s Ultralase, one of the UK’s leading laser eye surgery brands, on what we could do to raise awareness of National Eye Health Week which runs from 17th-23rd September. We discussed several fun ideas around changing the face of British institutions, to make people stop and think, and then one of my colleagues suggested we blur out the infamous Page 3 ... Read more
