Media moves from Journos to Chournos but social news is still from journalist sources

The last couple of weeks have been interesting because there have been some fascinating developments in the world of media. One of those new developments was the creation of a new site called Churnalism. The site has been created by The Media Standards Trust to basically identify where copied press release text is being lifted from and used. On Chunalism you can do the following according to the news release (whoops I have pasted it sorry): Compare a press release with more than 3 million articles published by national newspaper websites, the BBC or Sky News since 2008 See the ... Facebook Places Deals your new mobile loyalty card scheme

Yesterday was a pretty exciting day, not least because it was the football transfer deadline day and we saw the British transfer record broken but also because Facebook announced Facebook Places Deals product in UK and Europe and I think this is going to be a big deal. I think Facebook played catch up following the huge excitement of Foursquare and to a lesser extent Gowilla in 2009/10, as people across the world used their mobiles to check-in to local venues and give their tips and advice on certain places. Foursquare had been around quite a while when Facebook launched ... Read more

Social media guidelines must now be drawn up for footballers

This weekend was interesting as a Liverpool FC fan, we lost a manager who was a nice chap but didn’t look big enough for the job. So Kenny Daglish stepped up after being asked and he selected the team for the match against Manchester United. The team lost but I have to admit the performance was one of the best from them I have seen this season but that isn’t saying much. The fact that they played with 10 men for the majority of the game did bode well though. However, something that ruined the game was a penalty awarded ... Read more

The winner of the alternative Christmas track is finally revealed

You will remember we have been running a competition online for Audio-Technica, well we now have the winner. Here it is in all it’s glory – the winner is Zebedee Budworth with Astropets. We received more than 1,500 votes on the final shortlist and this won with 650 votes. Here is his official description of his entry: Hello I’m Zebedee and I’m a musician based in London! I wrote this song on the banjo then added all the instruments and vocals in my little bedroom utilising a book as a kick drum and keys as sleigh bells and stuff. All ... Read more

The alternative Christmas tune shortlist – vote for your favourite

You might remember that I posted a while back about a social media campaign we have been running for the global music manufacturer Audio-Technica. We ran a social media audit and workshop for them and created an online strategy which included launching the alternative Christmas track competition, which has been a lot of fun to run and organise albeit very busy. In the last few months we have received a huge number of musical entries from all across the world varying in quality and genre. The original aim of the campaign was to seek out fun and vibrant alternatives to ... Read more

The perfect blogger outreach campaign – infographic

I was reading my feeds this morning and came across this little gem from our friend Darren Rowse at Problogger. He has put together a nice infogrpahic on what makes the perfect blogger outreach campaign. I have worked on a lot of blogger outreach campaigns over the last few years and one of the first things I ask the client is what is in it for the blogger and his/her readers not just your marketing campaign? If there isn’t anything in it for both of them and the company then I tell them that it isn’t right for blogger outreach ... Read more

Companies using social media in Yorkshire – the latest statistics

In November a good friend of mine Charlotte Britton, conducted a survey with businesses in Yorkshire to find out how companies in the region were utilising social media marketing. One of the most interesting statistics I noticed was that 75% said social media had been responsible for creating positive PR about the company and 40% saying social media had helped mitigate PR problems. Those are quite bold statements but here are some of the other interesting headline statistics: 82% of respondents said they used LinkedIn to promote their business with 67% saying there key individuals were using LinkedIn to promote ... New social media study reveals more than half start a corporate blog for SEO goals

I am always reading (or viewing infographics) on the latest statistics about Facebook’s mobile usage increasing, Bebo being on the decline and more recently MySpace teaming up with Facebook as it moves away from being a social network to being seen as an entertainment platform. However, the study that has stood out to me this week has one been undertaken by Seomoz which looked into why people start blogs and use social media. An article in emarketer states: Nearly 71% of respondents said they use social media as part of their SEO strategy. Improving visibility was the primary reason nearly ... Read more

Facebook is now stopping your web traffic

I read an article today about a survey, which is reported to be the largest into online traffic, that sadly I whole heartedly disagreed with. The article which appeared in CorpComms Magazine stated the following about the survey: While two thirds of online companies use Facebook to promote their business, less than 30 per cent find the platform remotely effective in driving traffic to their website, according to the world’s largest survey of website traffic. Micro-blogging site Twitter fared equally badly with just 27 per cent of online companies attributing any rise in website visitor numbers to their presence on ... Read more
