Ten things I learnt from my trip to Cuba

Two weeks ago I returned from Cuba with my family, it was an eye-opening trip and I learnt a lot about a country that I knew very little about other than the critical role it almost played in World War Three and the revolution with Fidel Castro. The last week’s events have really saddened me as Hurricane Irma has torn through the country with devastating effects. I haven’t stopped thanking my lucky stars we left the country when we did. The people who got off our plane must have been evacuated by Thomas Cook although judging by its lacklustre PR response ... Read more

Hotel Review – Applegarth Villas Bowness Windamere

Those of you that read my blog regularly will know occasionally I decide to write a review or two but it’s only when someone inspires me to do so or I get a freebie for my honest opinion. Recently, I have been so busy with the growth of Prohibition I haven’t had much time to write about my experiences but this I thought was worth the extra time investment. This is the former not the latter, last weekend my wife and I decided to leave the kids back at home and take a trip to the lakes to celebrate our ... Read more

Warning: Writing fake black hat online reviews gets you in trouble

I received an email this morning from The Competition and Markets Authority(CMA), that prickled my interest, it was about an SEO company that has been forced to cease writing fake online reviews for small businesses and remove those already posted.  The investigation into Total SEO & Marketing Ltd, a search engine optimisation company, found that between 2014 and 2015 it had written more than 800 fake positive reviews for 86 small businesses that were published across 26 different websites which contain customer reviews. Now I know this happens but I thought this type of black hat work was mainly based ... Read more

Managing an Online Reputation – A practical book for dealing with a social media crisis

This is my review of a book called Managing Online Reputation: How to Protect Your Company on Social Media which is a book is written by Charlie Powell and produced by Palgrave Pocket Consultants. I read it over the Christmas holidays whilst watching far too many movies and drinking too much beer, it is one of the first books that has been outreached to me, that genuinely interested me, as I felt the outreach was well targeted because I love online crisis management and cover it quite a lot here on the blog. Charlie Pownall used to be the regional managing director at Burston Marstellar amongst ... Read more

44 Top Growth Hacks to Help PRs, Marketers and Start-ups

Yesterday I jumped on a plane and headed across to Ireland after being personally invited to Growth Hack Talks by a friend of mine, Ben Cotton. He managed to convince me to get off my backside, jump on  a plane and go and listen to a few other clever marketing people speak for once. The reason I decided to go was because it was on a subject, which had caught my eye, and which is still relatively new to us here in the UK. If you want to be successful in the marketing space you have to keep looking out ... Read more

Tripadvisor and how to get fined for negative reviews

Last month I was quite shocked to stumble upon an article about a couple who were actually fined for leaving a negative review on TripAdvisor. Tony and Jan Jenkinson, had been on their way to Oxford to visit family, when they stopped off at a Blackpool hotel to split up their journey. The couple then felt they received a poor quality of service at the hotel and in turn wrote a negative review on Tripadvisor. So everything sounds pretty standard so far, right? Wrong. The hotel then decided to take £100 off their card as a fine for this review. ... Read more

A new meditation app that changes your brain

This last couple of weeks my team and I have been preparing for the launch of a brilliant new meditation app called Anamaya. It has been carefully developed by mind and body specialist, Graham Doke, alongside a seven-year Apple veteran, Jonathan Koch. We have been working together for a while now and I had a particular interest in this application as I used meditation a few years ago to beat my insomnia which had plagued me for a number of years. Professional meditation programmes can help people discover their inner peace, mastering feelings of anger, pain and helping to manage ... Read more

Yorkshire’s most romantic hotel–OX Pasture Hall

Last weekend I was kindly invited to Ox Pasture Hall to sample the hotel and see what I thought about it and the surrounding area. As I have been blogging for almost eight years now, I do get offered a lot of things to review on the blog but sadly due to time restraints, I don’t tend to take them up very often, but this really seemed like an interesting offer as the hotel looked stunning online. The hotel itself is set in more than seventeen acres of beautiful gardens situated in the stunning North York Moors National Park, which ... Read more

Best burgers in Leeds – Almost Famous

To celebrate the Prohibition team being shortlisted for the CIPR’s Outstanding Consultancy award we decided to take the team out for a fancy burger and a drink or two. We were looking for somewhere local in Leeds that was a little bit different and decided to pay a visit to the new Almost Famous in Leeds. I believe there are already a couple in Manchester and Liverpool. I had taken the time to carefully read the entire menu carefully as it was packed with mouth watering burger concoctions like the “Johnny Mac” which has a deep fried Mac & Cheese ... Read more
