Andy Murray’s tears could be the PR moment he connected with the public

Unless you have been hidden under a rock for the last fortnight, you can’t have failed to miss the Wimbledon Tennis tournament taking place in the capital. I don’t watch as much tennis as I should but I do try to catch some of the best matches when it takes place. British hopeful Andy Murray became the first Briton in 74 years to get to the men’s final and the pressure was on him to deliver that first elusive title since Fred Perry. There is no doubt Andy is a great talent and being ranked 4th in the world clearly ... Read more

Facebook’s Olympics social media portal but can we write about it?

So this week Facebook launched a special portal called Explore London 2012 to give users more direct access to the athletes of the games. It has been set up to enable the athletes to speak to the fans easier – this will allow entrants to share updates and images from the games. Something which should be applauded – anything that opens up access to any huge event is brilliant in my opinion. According to Techcrunch the project has been in development for more than 18 months. However, it appears the Olympic Committee has taken a view that it can’t stop ... Read more

Football clubs now using social networking channels hurray!

I loved the story last week about Chelsea starting to use Twitter to communicate directly with fans. Basically, Chelsea FC has begun Twittering (under its mascot’s name) following a huge growth in fake Chelsea FC accounts. I can imagine there are quite a few people out there who would love to hear the ins and outs of their clubs. My club (Liverpool FC) were apparently the first to use it and now others appear to be springing up everywhere. Liverpool has more than 17,000 followers but it also has a number of copycat Twitter users here is one example: https://twitter.com/liverpool ... Read more

Tyson Vs Holyfield is one PR stunt too far

Mike Tyson Vs Evander Holyfield all those years ago was an exciting flight albeit slightly alarming. Two of the world’s hardest heavyweights battling it out, made for interesting late night viewing. However, that was twelve years ago and this is now. Today’s Metro is reporting that they plan to do it again with these two going at it again for $25 million each making it the highest paid fight of all time. Are they serious? Take a look at a recent picture of Mike below – does he look like a refined athlete ready to go twelve rounds? This is ... Read more

How not to do media relations – a quick example

Here is a quick story which might interest you. Hartlepool FC has decided (for commercial reasons apparently) to ban all photographers and reporters from its local paper the Hartlepool Mail. In response to this the Northern Echo, which covers most of the North East of England, thought it would help its local friend out by providing pictures and a review of the latest game. Hartlepool FC then kindly decided to ban it as well. I don’t know about you but I think this is rather daft as there will be only one winner here and it’s not going to be ... Read more
