Myspace launches social application competition

Tech Crunch has recently reported that Myspace has launched a new developer competition to create “the best sustainably social application.”It describes this as when a user keeps the application in their profile and engages for several months.

Now I think this is a great idea, I am all for improving applications and creating something which helps a social networker get on an do his thing.

Some good quality applications can improve a social network, I continue to be impressed with the many widgets and applications that share Twitter across the various platforms.

There are also applications which aren’t so great, such as Facebook’s Vampire and Pirates applications which I found mildly annoying.

Anyway here are the awards which you can enter if you have the skills and a useful idea:

  1. The best sustainably social application will win £10,000 and £100,000 advertising inventory on MySpace
  2. The most popular application measured by daily use over a three-month period between January and March 2009, will win £2,500 and £10,000 worth of advertising inventory on MySpace
  3. The best application created by a student will win £2,500 and £10,000 advertising inventory on MySpace

The developer platform is here and the UK Developers MySpace page is here.

If you want to enter, entries start from 1st November, with the top ten applications being selected by mid-January.

I like the fact Myspace are backing developers and they are looking for sustainable applications. If all of the social networks focused on providing applications we (the users) actually wanted it would surely be great news for everyone – especially them.
