Wolfstar shortlisted for CIPR award

Well after ten months of being at Wolfstar I think I might have finally made a good impression. We’ve been shortlisted in the Outstanding Small Consultancy category for our regional CIPR PRide awards. I am quite chuffed with that as I did the majority of writing and I was lucky enough to win a similar award last year with my friends at Trimedia. To be honest I am not sure if we will win it or not but it’s certainly nice to be recognised for doing a good job. You can view the full shortlist for all categories on the ... Read more

COI pitch costs UK PR agencies almost £2million

I have seen an article on the front cover of PR Week this morning which has got me pretty annoyed. At Wolfstar we applied to be included on the COI roster, in the hope that we could offer our services to the public sector. Now I should stress this roster is very important having dolled out £29.3million on PR and sponsorship in 2007-08. I have pitched for the roster before when I worked for Trimedia and we were lucky enough to be successful and we secured an extensive amount of work from it which made it very worthwhile. So when ... Is the delivery of social media really affected by location?

I have been reading lots of posts about the time it takes to manage social media, ProBlogger recently asked the question: “How long does it take for you to write a blog post?” and after 294 comments the average seemed to be around an hour. I have also been reading interesting posts from Richard Millington and Sally Whittle detailing how many types of communisation they receive a day. Richard got to 89 different types and Sally received more than 169 emails in 24 hours – that’s quite a lot of emails to have to reply to. Another communications blogger that ... Read more

Being an intern in a public relations agency

I have just read a great post on PRsquared about what it’s like doing an internship at a public relations agency. The message Laura was trying to disseminate is PR is not that glamorous but it can be fun. In fact, I thought it was so true to life that I read it out loud to our intern at Wolfstar and she found the similarities quite scary. So if you are thinking of a career in public relations I suggest you give it a read. Alternatively, check out some posts from our interns to see what they think about the ... Read more

Viral Guinness video causing a stir

It seems Guinness’ marketing team isn’t too happy about a spoof viral video which has appeared on YouTube. The video, which has received more than (29,000) views, at the time of writing, seems to suggest share a drink whilst being involved in extra curricular (group sex) activities. Now I have checked this out (to see what all the fuss is about) and the one thing that comes across to me is this lady is very  good at balancing inanimate objects – Joke. Seriously though, this seems to be a joke viral video which is being shared because – as with ... Read more

Could football teams benefit from using social media?

As a keen football fan, I was interested to read an article on Brand Republic reporting that Chelsea FC has made its website much more social. Supporters can now download widgets relating to fixtures, Chelsea TV and player feeds. There is also a new forum where fans can discuss the latest rumours etc. All of the widgets are exportable to the popular social networking sites. Now I applaud them for doing something social but this got me thinking about useful football widgets. Surely a useful one could be ‘The Fans’ Choice’ widget. This could enable the club’s fans to vote ... Read more

A social network dedicated to helping gypsy travellers stay in touch has received an industry award. Savvychavvy won the Comnmunity Award at The Catalyst Awards. Are we all getting carried away with Obama?

I was watching the news last night as I normally do when I saw Senator Obama address 200,000 people in Berlin. I was hugely impressed at how many people had attended the event in Germany to hear him speak. I like Mr Obama and I hope he wins as we need an inspirational leader in the white house after that buffoon. Come to think of it we could do with one at number 10 too. However, aren’t we all just getting a little carried away with “Obamamania”? Yes he is young, charismatic, interesting and inspirational but he isn’t president yet. ... Read more

Top ten tips for PR students whilst on work experience

I did work experience when I was at university as part of my degree and ever since I have always tried to help students with their placements to ensure they get the best from their time with me and the team. I have to admit I have had some very good students over the years and unfortunately some very bad ones. Without revealing too much I thought it was time to share some tips on how to secure a job in PR from doing work experience. Turn up – preferably on the right day and on time Act professionally and ... Read more

Sir Alex is the real PR master

Sir Alex piped up this morning saying he isn’t worried about Chelsea as most of the team are over 30 – a typical Fergie mind game tactic. Did it work? I sincerely doubt it but I bet it made him feel a whole lot better at the press conference. He is a master of PR, spin and pressure. I doubt the Man Utd communications director has to tell him what to say and how to say it and I doubt he would listen either. Fergie uses the same tactics every year – wind them all up and apply the pressure ... Read more
